My email policy
You may at a point wish to send me email, and if you do, please put an
effort in doing it properly. There are few things I like, and
the quality of an average email is not one. People don't seem
to understand the joy of receiving good email, and therefore
only a few actually proofraed their email before sending it. Not being
meticulous when writing email is an insult to the reader.
Below is a list of requirements I have for reading your email:
- Never send me email formatted in HTML. Email is text and not a
website. My spam filter will knock this into a certain file called
/dev/null.
- The text should be correctly wrapped. This means at 72-76
characters if your mail client doesn't know. It's really annoying
reading email written on a single, long line.
- Never send me any web postcards, -greetings or similar junk.
Companies do not offer these services out of their good heart. They only
do it to harvest adresses to send spam to, and I receive my share of
spam already.
- Spell correctly. Illiterate people are excused. I recommend Danes
learn a bit from here.
- Spelling errors in the subject line is probably number 5 or 4 on
my list of unwanted things.
- Use commas, and use them properly. It's a nightmare to read a text
where the author hasn't bothered to put a minimal effort into making his
text readable.
- Make sure that you write below the original text when
replying. Cut away irrelevant text, and make sure to separate your own
text from the text, you're replying to. It's awful to read mail where
the old and the new text are thrown together.
- Don't send me files if I haven't agreed to receive them. If you
need me to look at something I haven't agreed to receive, put it on a
web page and send me the URI. This way I can decided whether or not I
want to take the time needed to fetch it.
- Most important: Use your common sense. If you are a reasonable
person, you should be able to figure out how to behave.
Please also note that any email delivered to my address will be
considered my property, and therefore I will post it on my
pages without your notice or approval, if I feel inclined to do
so. If you write something clever to me, I might ask your permission
to publish (part of) it here, if I find it useful in any way.
